Flaxseed Nutrition Guide: ALA, Fiber, Lignans, Vitamins, and Minerals
What flaxseed is known for
Flaxseed is known for three main nutrition angles:
- ALA omega-3 fat
- dietary fiber
- lignans
It also contributes plant protein, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, and thiamin.
Macronutrients
Per 100 grams, common nutrition databases list flaxseed at roughly 534 calories, 42 grams fat, 29 grams carbohydrate, 27 grams fiber, and 18 grams protein. That is a comparison amount, not a suggested serving.
Most people use 1 to 2 tablespoons at a time.
ALA omega-3
ALA is a plant omega-3 fat. It is useful to distinguish ALA from EPA and DHA, the longer-chain omega-3 fats associated with fish oil. Flaxseed is a strong plant source of ALA, but it should not be described as identical to fish oil.
Fiber
Flaxseed contains soluble and insoluble fiber. Ground or soaked flax can thicken because some of its fiber and mucilage binds water.
Lignans
Lignans are plant polyphenols. Whole and ground flax carry the fiber/lignan story; flax oil does not have the same profile.
Vitamins and minerals
The strongest micronutrient signals are minerals and thiamin. Magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, and thiamin are the nutrients worth highlighting without hype.
Safety notes
Do not eat raw or unripe flaxseeds. Start small if you are not used to high-fiber foods. Higher doses can cause digestive discomfort. Ask a clinician if you are pregnant, managing a condition, taking medications, or using flax as more than a normal food ingredient.
