10 Practical Ways to Use Ground Flaxseed
Start with a small amount
If you are new to flax, start small. It is high in fiber, and jumping from zero to a large serving can be uncomfortable.
1. Oatmeal
Stir 1 tablespoon ground flax into cooked oats after cooking. Add fruit, cinnamon, and nuts.
2. Yogurt bowl
Mix ground flax into Greek yogurt or plant yogurt with berries and honey.
3. Smoothie
Blend ground flax with banana, berries, milk, and nut butter. It adds body and a mild nutty note.
4. Overnight oats
Ground flax thickens overnight oats. Use extra liquid because flax absorbs water.
5. Flax egg
Mix 1 tablespoon ground flax with 3 tablespoons water. Let it gel for about 5 minutes. This works as a binder in many muffins, pancakes, and quick breads.
6. Salad dressing
Whisk ground flax into vinaigrette when you want a thicker dressing. Use it soon and refrigerate leftovers.
7. Pancakes
Add 1 to 2 tablespoons ground flax to pancake batter. Add a splash more liquid if the batter thickens.
8. Energy bites
Mix oats, nut butter, ground flax, honey, and chocolate chips. Chill and roll into small bites.
9. Soup topping
Sprinkle a small amount over soup right before eating. This is better for texture than stirring it into a long simmer.
10. Baking
Ground flax works well in muffins and breads. Baking changes the "fresh" story, but it is still a practical way to use whole seeds you grind at home.
Soak or do not soak?
Soak when you want thickening, gel, or a flax egg. Do not soak when you want dry topping texture. Grinding matters more than soaking for most everyday uses.
